Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Claims Imran Khan to be Interrogated Over May 9 Incidents
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has announced that Imran Khan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will undergo interrogation regarding the May 9 incidents. Speaking to the media outside the parliament, Asif alleged that those who attacked military installations and targeted symbols of martyrs were "trained terrorists." He further claimed that the attacks were carried out according to a well-planned strategy and under the instructions of Imran Khan.
Asif accused the PTI chief of inciting the attacks on army installations and continuously targeting the armed forces, despite them having no involvement with him. The events on May 9 unfolded after Imran Khan's arrest from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. Subsequently, his supporters took to the streets and launched attacks on significant military installations, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and the Lahore Corps Commander's House, also known as the Jinnah House.
Responding to a question, the minister refuted the PTI's claims, especially those made by its overseas workers, that 25 people were killed during the May 9 riots. He categorically stated that no such incidents occurred and that no PTI worker or supporter lost their life.
Shifting the discussion to the budget, Khawaja Asif expressed confidence in the financial plan prepared by former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, stating that given the prevailing circumstances, no one could have presented a better budget. He emphasized that despite limited resources, the government had provided relief to all segments of society, including the salaried class and the middle class, who had faced economic hardships.
When asked about the date of the upcoming elections in the country, Asif assured that they would be held on time, reaffirming the government's commitment to the democratic process.
As the investigation into the May 9 incidents progresses and with the budget implementation underway, political tensions and public anticipation are likely to heighten in the coming weeks. The Pakistani populace eagerly awaits further updates on these matters, as they play a crucial role in shaping the country's political landscape.
